Pen Y Fan - Challenge From The South
A470, Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan, CF48 2HY
"This walk is 20km and has over 1000m of ascent so we regard this as a challenging event for seasoned walkers ??" About Starting at a lay-by on the A470 we'll walk a route that will see us rather alone for a good deal of the day despite walking to the summit of the highest mountain in Southern Britain, Pen y Fan. We'll follow the Nant Crew past some delightful pools before striking uphill and gaining the ridge. Here we will descend to Neuadd Reservoir and cross its dam and the remains of Welsh Water workings. We'll head up the Roman Road and skirt around Cribyn before the second uphill of the day to the summit of Pen y Fan. From here it's downhill all the way to the start point and we are sure Andy will then twist your arms for a stop off at The Nant Ddu Lodge for a cuppa or something stronger This is a fine mountain day with two steep ascents and one steep descent and with a fair proportion of the walk being cross country, so moving over open ground or along sheep tracks.
